Changing of Seasons, Fall 2017

Life goes by so quickly, that sometimes I lose track of the days. Someone once made a statement and I fully agree that when you are older, have retired, the week consists of six Saturdays and one Sunday. Friends and family keep my life interesting and fun. Each day is a new adventure, trying to work some, serve some, and just be grateful to be alive and well!

I spent quite a bit of time during September in, hotter than Utah, Arizona. Rob and Tamsen had the opportunity of going on a cruise with her family to Europe for a couple of weeks and invited me to "mind the stores". Young families have crazy schedules but I survived I love those Arizona grandchildren, just didn't take the opportunity for too many pictures. I was able to help Sue out with her boys a couple of different times when she had to work. So the trip was fairly productive, Id' say.

I love the Stake Relief Society Presidency I was able to serve with a number of years ago and we still enjoy going to lunch and catching up on everyone's busy lives. Sharman was departing for another mission with her husband and I left the next day for Arizona, but so glad we were able to "squeeze" it in.

I arrived back in Utah just in time for my Washington Federal Way Mission reunion. It was so fun to see some of those I had served with (particularly the Seniors). We had a lot of wonderful, shared experiences

Sue made a quick trip to Provo and we were able to attend the temple one day. The flowers are always spectacular.

I was also able to attend the wedding reception for one of the missionaries from the Washington Federal Way Mission. Congratulations to Cameron Sumison and his new bride, Kylee.

Nothing better than catching up with missionaries who served at the same time and place as you did. The Pincocks were in town for a couple of days and we got together for breakfast and a quick catch up. So fun to see them!

My daughter, Alisa, was the soprano soloist with the Salt Lake Choral Artists production, The Gift of Life. It was so fun to see her perform and share her incredible talent (if I do say so myself).

One of the most exciting things that happened this month was the marriage of Alisa to Brett Larsen on October 20th. Brett grew up in Utah County and is the father of three lovely children, Sofia, 13, Josef, 11 and Lukas, 6. He received his Master's from BYU in art and currently teaches there part-time and works for a company that designs and builds doors, furniture and home goods. The happy couple will be living in South Provo so I will be able to see them now and then (hopefully, a whole lot more often than when Alisa was living in New York).
They were married at my home by Bishop Wallace. (As a side note, some of the furniture in the living room [chairs, tables and lamps] were inherited from my mother and were in the same order as when I was married by my bishop (prior to the temple ceremony on the same day) to Roger over 52 years ago. I can imagine that some of those participants back then might also have been present on Alisa and Brett's wedding day.
There were 10 of us present: me,Brett's parents, Richard and Jean Larsen, his children: Sofia who was the Maid of Honor, Josef, who was the Best Man and Lukas, who was the ring bearer. My daughter, Jana, who was the photographer and delicious cake maker, Jacob Peterson (my grandson, who handled the music), the couple, and the Bishop.
Lots of friends helped the day be a memorable one. Maxine Denning and Susan Barker (with a little help and lots of opinions by me and Alisa) made all of the flowers used and worn by the bridal party, as well as decorating the cake and my home. Another friend, Barbara Carter, provided the ring bearer's pillow.

Summertime Fun, Part 2

I was able to continue family togetherness for a little bit longer after the Family reunions as Rob and Tamsen and family came to Provo to be able to visit with other friends and family. I heard about a huge flag hanging on a cable up a canyon near Pleasant Grove. It apparently was the size of a couple of football fields so I took my good friend, Maxine and we drove to see it.

We squeezed in some more family activities with a trip up to Bridal Veil Falls and Sun Dance;.Alisa and I played some tennis with Burke, but it sure gets hot quickly after the sun peaks over the mountains. We made a visit up to the cemetery to visit Rog's place of rest.

The Peterson family returned to Arizona and the quiet is good, but we miss not seeing them and interacting on a daily basis. One of the next things I did was to go with friends to the open house for the new MTC (Missionary Training Center) in Provo. It's a very sleek structure inside and out,  and it was fun to visit with some of the missionary who are currently there.

I enjoyed July 24th with the Maughan family, eating barbecued burgers and playing a few games in the evening. A few days later I enjoyed some more family  visiting when JaneAnne and her children returned for another visit.I'm always glad when we can squeeze in some game playing. Another fun thing we did was go to the quilt show at the Springville Art Museum. I took lots o picture especially for my quilt-making and quilt-loving friends. I'm amazed at how intricate the stitching is on the handmade quilts.

My birthday on August 24th was a lot of fun. My walking buddies wished me a happy birthday early in the morning. Alisa cooked me breakfast and we had a great barbecue at Jana's. Rob had written a song "75" and he put special apropos words with it and the family provided pictures which he and Tamsen put together in a video. It was so fun to watch and all my missing children were there on FaceTime and everyone sang Happy Birthday at the end. What great memories we're making. Jana baked a delicious cake and I managed to blow the candles out with such force that the top of the cake had a bit of wax added in.

It was still a party week when my Irish twin sister, Kathi Nelson came for a brief visit

Sue came for a brief visit the 1st of September and we were able to go visit the cemetery. It has been 5 years since Rog returned to his Heavenly Home and we miss him still.

And that's a wrap for the summer. It's still pretty hot, so hard to believe that summer is coming to an end and it won't be long before the changing of the leaves arrives! A cooling trend is welcome!
